Letter from U-USA Coalition to HMRECF

We the descendants of Holocaust victims, joined by concerned citizens of different faiths, are deeply insulted and disappointed by the Museum’s decision to open the “Uprooting Prejudice: Faces of Change” exhibition.

Even implicitly equating six million murdered innocent Jews and one individual with a court-proven criminal past is horrendously insensitive.

It seems obvious to any intellectually honest person, that while the Holocaust victims were murdered by a criminal Nazi regime, Mr. Floyd’s death was caused by the unfortunate act of reckless officers who have been arrested but not yet tried in court.

The policemen in this case in no way represent the majority of noble and courageous law enforcement personnel putting their lives on the line to protect millions of law- abiding Americans.

The de facto tone of the exhibition draws a parallel between American police and the Nazis. Although the museum’s intentions were seemingly good, the actual result is counterproductive, deeply offensive, and destructive.

It’s a cruel irony that the destruction and chaos instigated by the media’s one-sided coverage of the tragedy in Minneapolis turned out to be highly damaging to those whom the woke voices were presumably trying to defend:

  • Calls for defunding the police made crime skyrocket in the poorest neighborhoods of inner cities.
  • Small business owners, many of whom are minorities, found their livelihood and property looted and demolished.
  • Protesters congregating during the pandemic were infected en masse with COVID-19

The root cause of Mr. Floyd’s death should be carefully investigated, and those who broke the law should be prosecuted to the fullest extent. However, the violent riots, looting and destruction of our cities, ignited by irresponsible media and provocative politicians can in no way be aligned with the educational mission of the Holocaust Memorial Resource & Education Center of Florida, the state with the highest population of Holocaust survivors.
